In September I took Faith, Dakota and Bubba to their first Quarter Horse show. An introductory show was held in Spencer and the fees were really affordable. I showed Faith in Youth Yearling Mares and Dakota in the Open Yearling Mares. Both were really good in their classes but neither one of them liked walking by the shiny truck and trailer on the way to the arena. They weren't quite sure about their reflections! The other mare in Dakota's class reared up, came at us on her hind legs and flipped over. Dakota went back and up a bit but settled right down. We won the class since the other exhibitor lost the lead and was disqualified. Faith and I were the only ones in the Youth class.
Later in the day I rode Bubba and Dunny in the Youth Ranch Horse Pleasure class. My scores were average and I didn't have any major bobbles, so I was pleased. I was fourth on Bubba and fifth on Dunny out of five riders. Bubba and Dunny are quite attached and didn't care to be away from each other which did cause some problems. I know I have a lot to work on between now and next spring when Bubba becomes my main ranch horse pleasure mount.
I also saddled Faith and Dakota a couple of times in September. They both act as if they've been saddled hundreds of times. I hope that's a good sign of things to come. I don't think I'll get on them until the spring. We're going to go to my mentor's feed store where he has a small indoor area to ride to put the first rides on them. There's not much room for them to do much in there, our arena is really open and if they do act up I'd rather be in a small area.
At the end of September another show was held at the State Fairgrounds. This was the annual Iowa Quarter Horse Futurity. They added ranch horse pleasure, barrels and poles so I got to take Dunny. We had good rides in all of our classes and I was really excited to get to show again.
We still have not been told the results of the program but have been told to expect them some time in October.
