In early January I attended the annual IQHYA meeting and then helped on Sunday at the Breeder's Futurity Stallion Service Auction. I got to see Don Clark again who I met a few years ago at a ranch horse clinic. Don introduced the concept of the Ranch Horse Pleasure class to the AQHA and was the founder of the Iowa Ranch Horse Association.
At the youth meeting I was elected to the position of point keeper. I'm going to be working with another youth member to keep track of the show points during the next year. There are some other events I'll be helping out with, too.
My show plans have had to change for the upcoming show season. I was planning on going to The Mayflower Show in early May, until I found out that they were not going to have barrels and poles or a youth ranch horse pleasure class this year. I was really disappointed because I'd been planning on going with Dunny since last year and had planned on showing one of the fillies in halter. I'm going to have to wait until one of the shows in Denison to show and I really hope they offer a youth ranch horse pleasure class. One of my long-term goals is to qualify for the Youth World in the class but I need to have more experience showing in the class.
The weather and being sick has kept me from working with the fillies as much as I would like to this month. We handle them every day when we switch them from stalls to lots. Both of them have big "attitudes" and aren't always cooperative when we are leading them. They both like to buck, rear and do other silly things while leading them. I'm looking forward to when we have some consistent warm weather so I can work on those skills and attitudes. As I write this we are having another winter storm so they will be in for a day or two until the weather is better. I'll still brush them and work with their feet.
