The girls have been home for a week now and they are settled in well. On Thursday we had our vet, Dr. Young, out to look at Dakota's inside right ankle. It was swollen with a small wound on it. After examining it, Dr. Young said there was no infection and instructed me to keep it clean.
Dakota came out of her stall finally! My dad helped me and after the first two times she now comes in and out without any problems. Each time they come in and out of their stalls we let them graze some and give them lots of scratches.
Whenever we lead them we work on having them beside us and not lagging behind. We are also working on desensitizing their legs and picking up their feet for future trims.
A few members of my 4-H Hippology team came out to see Faith & Dakota. I shared with them how I applied for the program and what I was going to do with the girls in the next year. Some other friends have also stopped by to meet them since we brought them home.
We have been putting them outside in a dry lot during the day. They get to have free exercise and they also have access to brome hay and fresh water.
Each filly has her own attitude and personality. Dakota doesn't mind her legs being touched but Faith does not want to be touched below her knees.
This next week I'm going to keep working with them every day on leading, tying and being touched. They also need to have some vaccinations and we will do a fecal egg count to see if they need to be wormed. I'm having a lot of fun with the girls!
