Faith is having her hoof rasped.
It's January first, and that means all horses registered with the AQHA are now a year older, regardless of their actual birth date. The fillies are now yearlings. So, Happy First Birthday Faith and Dakota!
On December first, our farrier came out to trim Faith and Dakota's hooves. After examining their hooves the farrier decided the front hooves needed done but the rear hooves didn't. Both fillies were resistant to having the farrier pick up their hooves. I picked up their hooves and then Ron (the farrier) would come over and take them from me. Both fillies did really good at standing still for him. There were a couple of times that each pulled back but they didn't struggle or throw a tantrum.

Dakota is now off of stall rest. Her incision has healed and she's back to full feed. When we first turned her out she did a LOT of bucking and snorting!
The Iowa weather has been harsh this winter compared to this time last year. My dad and I finished making another stall so all of our horses have shelter, just in time as we had a blizzard hit. The blizzard filled one of our lots with about five feet of snow. Without this lot, we have two lots for five horses. Faith, Dakota, and my pony Mouse alternate days in one of the lots. Harold and Dunny, two of our Quarter Horses, alternate days for the other lot. It has increased my work because I have more stalls to clean. But on the upside the fillies are getting handled a lot.
In two weeks I will attend the annual Iowa Quarter Horse Youth Association meeting. I'm really excited to join and become active with the group. The dates for the Mayflower show have been set for May 2-5 and my goal is to show one, or both, fillies in halter and showmanship. I have a lot of work to do between now and then!
